RIGA, February 6, 2006  –  Latvia Gay Pride and “Friendship Days” might be four months away, but the ‘anti-gay’ movement in the Baltic state is preparing for battle.

But the immediate priority of the ‘hatemongers’ is a campaign direct at member of the Saeima – the Latvian Parliament – which is about to adopt changes to the Latvian criminal code which would make illegal hate speech against sexual minorities, amongst others.

A manifesto was published today in Rītdiena, a free sheet the publishers claim has a print run of 125,000 and which is distributed directly to homes throughout Latvia.  However, research shows the paper has 30,000 readers.

For a literal translation of the ‘manifesto, see below.

“Thirty-thousand is enough to make us uncomfortable,” commented a spokesperson from Mozaika who explained that the paper comes out two or three times a week.

“There is never an issue without some sort of attack against the LGBT community – be it ‘famous US scientists’ who know how to cure homosexuality or threats about gays stealing and selling infants,” he said.

“Until now we have not taken any action, but we are monitoring the paper and will prepare a petition to the prosecutor general and the Ombudsman.”

Using emotive language, the paper calls gay men and women – and LGBT groups – ‘pederasts’. “This word is used consciously in order to incriminate and dehumanise us,” the Mozaika spokesperson suggested.

Rītdiena is also calling for a boycott of Latvia’s major daily, Diena, which takes a clear stand for human rights, including LGBT rights.  And the paper says that if the Saeima brings in any change in the law to the benefit of the gay community, it will organise a national referendum.

The proposed changes to the Latvian criminal code are seen by Rītdiena and other extremist groups as “attacks on family values”.

And in a call to all gay and bisexual men and women across Europe – and beyond, Mozaika says: “[This manifesto] clearly shows how greatly we need your support, in particular during Friendship Days and Riga Pride 2007.”

The event is being held between May 30 and June 3, with Pride itself on June 2.

Local police have already reacted to the stand taken by Rītdiena.

While in Brussels, MEP Michael Cashman, the president of the European Parliament's Intergroup on gay and lesbian rights, hit out at the Rītdiena statement

“We must resist this attempt to deny basic human rights. They are extremists who do not represent the decent, ordinary citizens of Latvia,” he said.

The Baltic Times reports that Riga police have prepared a special plan for ensuring security during the gay pride festival planned for this summer in Riga.

Interior Minister Ivars Godmanis declined to reveal to the newspaper how the police are planning to work during the parade and also declined to comment on the police performance during the 2006 gay pride festival.

The police detained 14 people during the disturbances last year.

This is a literal English translation of the article in today’s Rītdiena:

Ladies and gentlemen – do you have gunpowder in yourselves?  Of course you do.  On Saturday our newspaper Rītdiena, called on activists to help organise a demonstration against pederasts and pederast ideology.

In just one day, more than 250 activists rang us.  We’ve received calls from working people, teachers, schoolchildren, students, instructors, pensioners, farmers, artists and sailors – in short, representatives of all kinds of professions.

Each of them is offering his or her investment in organising the protest.  Businessmen are calling us to offer material and technical aid for the event.

Thank you to all of you.  Enormous, enormous thanks!  No investment will be forgotten.  No one is unnecessary in the people’s fight against pederasts and pederast ideology.

O, nation, wake up to a new Renaissance!

The newspaper Rītdiena has started to organise a peaceful protest demonstration against the shameless demands of pederasts.

Here are the goals of the demonstration:

1)  To ensure that by law, any propaganda of pederasty and homosexuality is banned.

2)  To ensure that the labour law is amended to say that pederasts are banned from working in national government structures or any jobs which have to do with the raising of children and young people.

3)  To make sure that the law does not specify any criminal or administrative prosecution of people who take part in the fight against pederasts, who denounce pederasts and the spread of the pederast ideology.

Latvia, remember that the Constitution says that sovereign power in the Latvian state belongs to the Latvian nation.  You, fellow Latvians, are the ones who will define the laws that will and will not exist in this country.

The Saeima must carry out your will and nothing more.  If the aforementioned goals can be achieved with a peaceful demonstration of protest, then let it be.  If not, we will move forward and organise a national referendum to achieve the three aforementioned goals.  The referendum will prove who is stronger – the nation or a handful of pederasts and their supporters.

Readers, no support for politicians who stand for the rights of pederasts!!!

Readers, boycott and call on your fellow citizens to boycott the newspaper Diena, the main source of propaganda for pederasts and pederasty in Latvia!  Don’t buy the newspaper Diena!  Don’t subscribe to the newspaper Diena!  Cancel your subscription to the newspaper Diena!

Forward, reader!  Toward a new Renaissance!

Organise your fellow citizens.  The protest demonstration will be put together in columns in accordance with each Latvian administrative district, major city or organisation, if the organisation ensures more than 1,000 protesters.

Foreign representatives from all of Europe will take part in the protest demonstration.  The newspaper Rītdiena and its owners will undertake all organisational leadership and all political responsibility.

Ring us on 735-7135 to join in organising the protest demonstration.  Make sure that tens and tens of thousands of protesters take part in the demonstration.  We need every citizen, every resident, irrespective of nationality, of social status or religious belief.

In a united front against pederasts and the pederast ideology!  We will win!

Vēl latviet’s nevaid miris!

Lasītājas un lasītāji, ir Jums pulveris iekšā! Tik tiešām ir! Pēc sestdienas publikācijas Rītdienā, kurā aicinājām pieteikties aktīvistus demonstrācijas

organizēšanai pret pederastiem un pederastu ideoloģiju, tikai vienas dienas laikā pieteikušies vairāk nekā 250 aktīvistu. Mums

zvana strādnieki, skolotāji, skolēni, studenti, pasniedzēji, pensionāri, zemnieki, mākslinieki, jūrnieki. Īsi sakot visdažādāko profesiju pārstāvji,

un katrs no viņiem piedāvā savu ieguldījumu protesta demonstrācijas organizēšanā. Mums zvana biznesmeņi un piedāvā materiālo un tehnisko

atbalstu pasākuma organizēšanai.

Paldies Jums visiem! Milzīgs, milzīgs paldies! Neviena ieguldījums netiks aizmirts! Neviens nav lieks tautas

cīņā pret pederastiem un pederastu ideoloģiju!

Tauta, mosties jaunai atmodai!

Laikraksts Rītdiena ir uzsācis organizēt miermīlīgu protesta demonstrāciju, kura tiks vērsta pret pederastu nekaunīgajām prasībām.

Demonstrācijas mērķi:

Atsakieties no avīzes

Diena abonementa!

Uz priekšu, lasītāj! Uz jauno atmodu!

Organizē savus līdzpilsoņus. Protesta demonstrācija tiks veidota kolonnās atbilstoši katram Latvijas rajonam, republikas nozīmes pilsētām

un organizāciju kolonnās, ja organizācija nodrošina vairāk nekā 1 000 demonstrantu. Protesta demonstrācijā piedalīsies ārvalstu pārstāvji

no visas Eiropas.

Laikraksts Rītdiena un tā īpašnieki uzņemas visu organizatorisko virsvadību un visu politisko atbildību.

Zvani pa tālruni 7-357-135un iesaisties protesta demonstrācijas organizēšanā. Panāc to, lai protesta demonstrācijā izietu desmitiem

un desmitiem tūkstošu protestētāju.

Mums vajadzīgs katrs pilsonis, katrs iedzīvotājs, neatkarīgi no tautības,

neatkarīgi no sociālās piederības un no reliģiskās pārliecības!

Vienotā frontē pret pederastiem un pederastu ideoloģiju!

Mēs uzvarēsim!
