LONDON, May 11, 2007 –
Westminster City Council, Amnesty International, IDAHO, LGBT History
Month/Schools Out, and the University of Arts are combining to organise a
major event to next week at the London College of Fashion that commemorates
IDAHO, the International Day Against Homophobia, on May 17.
The event will take place at the
London College of Fashion from 6pm until 11pm and will involve an exhibition
of work by London art students, and speeches by Liberal Democrat Higher
Education spokesperson Stephen Williams MP; Cllr Darren Johnson AM; Maryam
Namazie of the Organisation for the Emancipation of Women in Iran; and
Baroness Turner of Camden.
Students have designed posters
celebrating either LGBT History Month or IDAHO, and the winning designers
will be awarded £200 each by Baroness Turner on the night.
The winning designs will then be
distributed to every school in London.
A short film will be shown on the
evening showing the students at work, following the process from the initial
brief through to the winners being selected by a panel consisting of Sue
Sanders of LGBT History Month, Derek Lennard of Idaho, and Paul Brown of
Westminster City Council.
Entertainment will be provided by
rising comedy star Zoe Lyons.
Attendance is by invitation only,
and among those attending will be key LGBT activists, including
representatives of the Metropolitan Police, all political parties, the
Polish Green Party, and the TUC.
Derek Lennard, the UK coordinator of IDAHO, said last
night that there were over 70 events planned throughout the country.
He said that the number could well top 100.
