EuroPride 2009 in Zürich was a five-week long celebration of gay pride that
goes back to the illegal police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York City
and the resulting LGBT civil rights movement that spread world-wide.
On the night of June 27, 1969, the raid on the bar in Greenwich Village
used by gays, lesbian and transsexuals - the police said alcohol was
being served without a licence, it was just another raid.
But it developed into a riot as many of the customers were arrested and
taken away. News of the raid and the riot spread through New York
like wildfire and despite the bar having its interior smashed up and
flooded by thne police, Stonewall Inn proudly announced it would be
reopen the following evening, which it did.
The events in
Zürich culminated on Saturday June 6 with the EuroPride Parade
attracting tens of thousands to the Swiss city from across Europe and
beyond.
And even the local trams were flying the Rainbow Flag ... and of course
the local police were friendly...
