Copenhagen has been awarded the 2009 World Outgames, the Danish daily newspaper Berlingske Tidende is reporting this morning (August 31). “This is extremely good for the city as a way to indicate tolerance,” Copenhagen city councilman Martin Geertsen has been quoted as saying. “If we are to have any hopes of hosting the Olympics in 2024, then there are some obstacles we need to overcome, and this is a good way to practice,” he added. There is no official word from the Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association (GLISA) which is holding its inaugural delegate conference in Montréal, Canada this week. The congress opened yesterday (August 30). The official Danish government-run website Denmark.dk is also carrying the story. It reports: “The event, which is expected to draw upwards of 16,000 homosexual athletes, is considered 'the gay Olympics' and promises to aid the city's chances for winning a bid to host the Olympic Games in 2024.” Earlier this month, Copenhagen was host to the successful Gay World Football (Soccer) Championships.
