Often considered a minority within a minority, there are still dozens and dozens of gays sports teams to support or play for all around the country. What is more, gay sports fans often play or support several gay teams. So Paul Bolger, supporters secretary for the Kings Cross Steelers (the world’s first gay rugby union club which was formed in 1995), decided to bring everyone together for a fun sports day, so links could be made and, as he says “we could start supporting each other at fundraisers and events”. We may play very different sports but basically we have very similar aims,” pointed out. The event is being staged on Saturday August 13 from 2pm and the Steelers are inviting everyone to come along to their home ground in East London for a cheap bar-b-q, cheap beer and the chance to try out different sports with varying degrees of seriousness. “We don’t want this to be a Steelers event per se, so we are encouraging teams to bring recruitment literature, invite their own supporters and bring along some equipment to let people have a go and have some fun,” said Bolger. “But whether you play an individual sport, are part of a team or even just interested in getting back into sport, this is the perfect event for you and you’ll find a really warm welcome,” he added. With a squash court, newly refurbished gym, bar and playing fields, and events such as egg and spoon and drag racing, everyone should find something that suits them. The Steelers’ ground is at East London RFC, Holland Road, West Ham, E15. Nearest station is West Ham (Underground: District, Hammersmith & City and Jubilee Lines. Rail Silverlink (North London Line) and c2c Fenchurch Street rail services).
