Oz Dykes In Trouble for Using “I” Word

Humour From 'Down Under'

SYDNEY, November 17, 2005  –  Dykes on Mikes, said to be the biggest lesbian event in Australia, is in a spot of bother.  And it is all over their full name, Dykes on Mikes – Lesbian Idol.

In what could be seen as a somewhat “un-neighbourly” move, Grundy Television has threatened legal action if the world “Idol” is not removed.

Grundy Television, famous for its “Neighbours” soap opera, is responsible for “Australian Idol”, the television talent show.

And company big-wigs appear to be doing anything to put a stop to their show’s plummeting ratings slide – including, it appears, having an ‘idle pop’ at a popular Sydney karaoke event.

So now “Dykes on Mikes – Lesbian Idol” has begat “Dykes on Mikes – Lesbian ?”.  No further name change is expected as the famous Dykes on Bikes motorbike groups down-under are unperturbed by the play on words.

Nice one, girlz.  At least no one will be thrown in the slammer – Cell Block H comes to mind – unless the winner of the current competition is idolised.

Now, what’s that rhyme about Simon Grundy …

Note to MGM lawyers:  The use of the word "Oz" is in the context of "Australia" and is nothing to do with the land at the end of the Yellow Brick Road or Dorothy.
