MOSCOW, September 24 (GayRussia wire)  –  Michael Cashman, the out-gay Member of the European Parliament, has invited the Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov to Strasbourg for a “summit” on gay pride events and of LGBT rights to expression, demonstrations and meetings.

Also invited are the mayors of Bucharest, Riga and Warsaw – the three European capitals where there were Pride problems this summer.  The meeting is set for December 14.

And the MEP, who is also an actor and was in the famous British soap opera “EastEnders” for many years, has further pledged his support for the very first Moscow Pride, due to be staged in May 2006.

“Apart from the letter sent to the Mayor of Moscow, Mr. Cashman confirmed yesterday his personal participation in Moscow gay festival in May 2006 as a speaker of IDAHO conference as well as the marching during the parade,” said Nikolai Alekseev of GayRussia.ru.  “He said that he will come to Moscow and bring other MEPs.

“We would like to thank the European Parliament and personally Michael Cashman for showing real interest in gay life in Eastern Europe and Russia.  Michael’s words of support materialized into real actions,” Alekseev added.

Cashman, who chairs the LGBT Intergroup of the European Parliament, is to speak at the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) conference which is being held in Moscow at the same time as the city’s Pride.

Moscow Pride organisers revealed yesterday that the winner of the logo competition is Marco Blagojevic, a 24 years-old from Serbia and Montenegro.
