CROYDON, August 22, 2006 –
Aurora, Croydon’s only Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) police
consultative group, is looking LGBT people to get involved in its activities.
The group is relatively small and
needs more LGBT people, especially women and black and minority ethnic
people.
In the past year Aurora has been
working to reduce homophobic school bullying, and its “Which Loo?”
guidelines for transgendered people have been endorsed by the Metropolitan
Police.
The group is also addressing the
concerns of LGBT Muslims and Christians.
Aurora has also highlighted an
often forgotten aspect of gay rights – the listing on the Sex Offenders
Register of gay men for offences that did not involve children.
The group’s website has links to
the Home Office documents which detail the procedure for gay men to have
their names removed from the Register.
Aurora also provides information on
the UK Lesbian and Gay Asylum Group helpline to help keep lesbian and gay
asylum seekers from criminal exploitation and blackmail.
Urgently needed are LGBT people to
stand as officers, who will be elected at the Annual General Meeting on
November 8. Nominations need to be received by the end of the meeting at
Croydon Town Hall on September 11.
