Thirteen Embassies, representing countries on four continents, have issued a joint statement supporting Budapest Pride Festival, which culminates with a parade in the Hungarian capital next Saturday afternoon. Aug 26: UK: Young Gays in West of England Stand to Gain from Big Lottery Fund Cash Award. A variety of initiatives are planned for the coming years by Bristol-based Educational Action Challenging Homophobia (EACH) following a cash award of £391,668 from the Big Lottery Fund. Aug 21: Sénégal: Pattern of Persecution of Gays Continues in Sénégal – Teen Faces Trial Next Week. A 17 year-old Sénégalese man is due to stand trial on August 24 for sexual acts “against nature”, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) revealed last night. Aug 19: UK/Iraq: MP Intervenes to Stop Deportation from UK of Gay Iraqi. A gay Iraqi man whose application for refuge in the United Kingdom has been refused, should not be deported, an MP said today. Sarah Teather, the Liberal Democrat MP for Brent in London, is demanding that the Home Secretary halt the deportation of the man, whose name cannot be revealed because of personal safety reasons, who lives in her constituency. Aug 18: Iraq: Iraqi LGBT Welcomes HRW Report on Iraqi Gays – and Urges Practical Aid. The Iraqi LGBT group today welcomed the release by Human Rights Watch of its report They Want Us Exterminated which documents the killing of gay and transgender people in Iraq, in particular the extensive media coverage it has generated. Aug 18: UK: Royal Navy Spurns Gay Pride in its ‘Hometown’. The Royal Navy came under attack today for shunning participation at Gay Pride in one of its ‘home cities’, Plymouth. The attack came from gay human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell who accused navy brass of “rank hypocrisy”. Aug 17: Israel: Gay Israeli Defender of Palestinian Human Rights Ezra Nawi Spared Jail … For Now. Jerusalem Magistrate Judge Eilata Ziskind has announced that a final decision on sentencing Palestinian human rights defender Ezra Nawi – an openly gay Israeli Jew – will now take place on September 12. Aug 15: UK: Swindon Pride. The second Swindon Gay Pride got underway this morning with the very first parade through the Old Town. Over 100 people took part and were cheered by onlookers. Following the parade, the festivities got underway in the delightful surroundings of Old Town Gardens, which were ablaze with floral colour. The Mayor of Swindon, Councillor David Wren is due to formally open the event. Page includes parade and event photos.. Aug 12: USA: Harvey Milk’s Campaign Manager Remembers the Gay Activist. From Prop 6 to Prop 8: An interview, conducted recently by GayRussia.ru, interview with Anne Kronenbe: “You are the children of Harvey Milk,” she told Russian activists. Aug 12: Serbia: Serbian Football Authorities Have Change of Heart on Anti-Gay Graffiti in Belgrade. The football ‘fans’ whose signatures appeared on gay-hate graffiti in the city over the past two weeks have now been condemned by the two clubs concerned, Red Star Belgrade and Partizan. Aug 12: UK: Football: FA and Premier League Slammed by Fans for Failure to Tackle Anti-Gay Abuse. Days after it emerged that football fans in Belgrade had painted the city with homophobic graffiti, a YouGov survey of over 2,000 football fans across Britain has found that anti-gay abuse in the sport has been witnessed by seven in ten fans. Aug 10: Russia: Seventy Protest Outside Moscow Gay Club Demanding Its Closure. “Moscow is Not Sodom” chanted a group of 70 people on Saturday in Moscow during a public protest. Aug 10: Serbia: Outraged Gay Community in Belgrade Demand FIFA Action Over Hate Graffiti. Football fans’ graffiti calls for murder of gays. The failure of the Football Association of Serbia and two clubs in Belgrade to distance themselves from homophobic messages and calls to murder gay persons which appear in graffiti across the city, bearing the ‘signature’ of fans from the Partizan and Red Star Belgrade has so outraged gays that they have written to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the world governing body for football, demanding action. Aug 9: Russia: Two Arrested at Moscow Gay Club Following Raid by Police, Prefect – and the Media Aug 8: UK: Sun Shines on Gay Pride in Cheltenham. This year, the weather was kind to Gloucestershire Gay Pride, one of the smaller Prides in the UK. The previous two years saw wind and rain for the annual event, which was started four years ago. But today there was not a rain cloud in sight and the temperature hit 22 degrees in the afternoon. Aug 8: UK: Gloucestershire Pride in Pictures. Ezra Nawi, a 57-year old Israeli Jewish plumber who is openly gay, is facing up to 10 months in jail for non-violently resisting Israel’s demolition of Palestinian home in the occupied West Bank. Aug 7: UK: Plea to UK Psychiatrists’ Governing Body to Ditch ‘Gay Cure’ Therapies. Psychiatrists should stop offering homosexuals therapies that promises to change their sexual orientation, secularists said this morning. Aug 7: UK: London Group Spent £60,000 Last Year to Aid Gay and Transgender Iraqis. Iraqi LGBT, the London-based group that support gay, lesbian and transgender Iraqis, received just over £60,000 in donations in the year to May 2009, the accounts published this morning show. |
