Feb 28:  Nigeria:  Nigerian National Assembly Advances Draconian Anti-Gay Bill.  By Rex Wockner. The Women Affairs and Youth Committee of Nigeria's House of Representatives held a hearing on February. 14 on an extreme antigay bill that some activists had believed was not going to see any action.

Gay Penguin Love: It’s a Hot Topic.  They’re so cute, so cuddly, so adorable.  But penguins can also be controversial.  Roy and Silo, two male penguins in New York’s Central Park Zoo, had an affair that sparked a hot debate over the nature vs. nurture theory of homosexuality as the pair became the world’s best known “gay” penguins.

Gay Activists to Protest as Moscow Mayor Visits London.  A demonstration is to be staged outside London’s City Hall on Wednesday when the Mayor of Moscow, Yuri Luzhkov, visits for the annual “M4” summit of the mayors of Berlin, London, Moscow and Paris.

Scientists Urged to Report Right Wing Distortions of Gay Research.   A new website is launched today which encourages scientists to report right wing distortions of their research on gay issues.

Moscow Gay Pride Organisers Take City’s Mayor to Court for “Satanic” Insults Organisers of the first ever gay pride festival in Moscow Nikolai Baev and Nikolai Alekseev  are to sue Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov in Tverskoi district court of Russian capital.

Gay Groups Unite in Belarus.  Representatives of most gay and lesbian groups have agreed to work together where possible in joint projects. Unpublicised, the meeting was said to have been a “great success”.

UN Experts Oppose Proposed Nigerian Ban on Gays Voicing serious concern over a proposed Nigerian bill which would effectively outlaw same-sex relationships, four independent United Nations experts have said it would violate international human rights norms, and urged the Government to withdraw it immediately.

Article Advocating Tolerance of Gays in Schools Branded ‘Inappropriate’.  Commentary.  Somewhere out it the ‘backwoods’ of Indiana, in the land of free speech and tolerance, there has been something of a nuclear explosion over a newspaper article advocating a little tolerance of gays.  The furore has not been caused by some established writer on gay issues like Deb Price, but by a heterosexual Megan Chase, the writer and her newspaper hardly known to the world – until yesterday.

‘Monastery People’ Video Featuring Gay Anthem ‘YMCA’ Pulled from YouTube A humorous video of young Dominican monks in Krakow performing a routine of the iconic “gay anthem” originated by The Village People, “YMCA” has outraged monastery officials.

Irish Students Urge TDs to ‘Vote for Fairness’ on Civil Unions As TD’s (MPs) assembled at the Dáil ahead of this evening’s debate on Labour’s ‘private members bill on Civil Unions, the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) is strongly advising TDs to “vote for fairness”

Cautious Welcome by Gay Christians for Decision of Troubled Anglican Primates Meeting.  There was a cautious welcome to the communiqué issued late last night by the Primates of the Anglican Communion meeting in Dar Es Salaam from three Christian gay advocacy groups.

Ovation for Gay Iraqi at London ‘Faith’ Conference The leader of the gay rights group Iraqi LGBT, Ali Hili, received a standing ovation from 250 delegates when he addressed the “Faith, Homophobia and Human Rights” conference in London on Saturday.

How TDs Vote On Gay Civil Unions Bill Could Affect Election Prospects – USI.  The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) has pre-announced an audit of TDs’ votes for/against the Civil Unions Bill when voting takes place in the Dáil on Wednesday, (February 21), it emerged at the weekend.

Humanist Jeered for Supporting Gay Rights at Nigerian Public Hearing.  A Nigerian Humanist was repeatedly jeered in Abuja last week during his statement opposing the proposed new anti-gay legislation in Nigeria, the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association revealed last night.

Labour’s Civil Union Bill Will Give Legal Recognition to Same-Sex Unions.  By Brendan Howlin TD, Labour spokesperson on Justice.  In many respects the tabling of this Bill marks a significant watershed in our legislative and social history.  This week will mark the first time that the Dail has been given the opportunity to consider legislation providing for the recognition and registration of civil unions entered into between persons of the same sex.

No Berlin ‘Teddy’, But Moscow Gay Pride Film Feted at Awards Ceremony.  The organisers of Moscow Gay Pride wanted an “objective chronicle” of the first-ever Pride in Moscow last year.  Director Vladimir Ivanov duly fulfilled the task set.

IGLHRC Report: Gay Nigerians Respond to Same-Sex Prohibition Act.  Nigerian lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgenders speak out against a proposed law in a new report by the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC).

Irish Dail Debates Civil Union Bill for Gays Next Week The Dáil Éireann (Irish Parliament’s lower house), is set to debate and vote on civil unions for gay couples next week.

Survey Shows Many UK Primary Care Trusts Fail to Take Sexual Health Seriously.  Government initiatives making sexual health a priority are not reaching many local services, a survey from Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) and professional associations shows today.

Moscow Pride Documentary Premieres at Berlinale Film Festival Amid Tight Security.  Vladimir Ivanov’s documentary Mockba Pride ’06 had its official world premier yesterday at the Berlinale Film Festival, and was well received by the ‘sold-out’ audience.

Euro MEPs Gay Rights Intergroup Concerned By Draft Nigerian Law.  The controversial draft law that is currently going through the Nigerian legislative process would violate basic human rights, the European Parliament’s ‘Intergroup’ on gay and lesbian rights reiterated today.

Being Gay Is Bad for Your Health – Moscow City Hall Official.  Commentary.  Yuri Luzhkov, the notorious and homophobic Mayor of Moscow, appears to have got his City Hall officials scratching around to come up with new excuses to ban this year’s Moscow Gay Pride Parade.

Euro Intergroups Launch Written Declaration on Combating Gay Bullying.  The Intergroup on Gay and Lesbian Rights and the Trades Unions Intergroup formally launched today a written declaration on combating homophobic bullying.

Christian Gay Group Meets Nigerian Archbishop Peter Akinola.  Davis Mac-Iyalla, director of the Christian gay group Changing Attitude Nigeria, briefly met Archbishop Peter Akinola, Primate of All Nigeria, today.

Walk With Stonewall to Help Stamp Out Homophobic Hate-Crime.  Hundreds of lesbian and gay people and their friends are expecteded to join Stonewall for the charity’s 4th annual Equality Walk in Brighton on Bank Holiday Sunday May 6.

Nigerian Gay Christian Group Appeals to Anglican Primates.  A group of gay Christians in Nigeria has written an open letter to the Archbishops of the world-wide Anglican Communion on the eve of the debate in the Nigerian Parliament of a draconian Bill to ban same-sex relationships.

Banning of Gay Pride in Chisinau Unlawful – Supreme Court.  The Supreme Court of the Republic of Moldova ruled today that the refusal of the Chisinau city hall to authorise the gay and lesbian solidarity march in the city last year was unlawful.  Article also in Russian on this page

Brussels Welcomes Russian Government Support of Freedom of Assembly for GaysLast week’s announcement by the Russian Federation that it supports the freedom of assembly for gays has been welcomed by the European Parliament’s Intergroup for gay and lesbian rights, but with a degree of caution.

Russian Government Supports Freedom of Assembly for Gays.  In a remarkable statement on the banning of Moscow Gay Pride last year, the Russian government has strongly supported the right of sexual minorities to freedom of assembly.

BBC Programme Explores the Rise and Fall of ‘Gay Radio’.  BBC Radio 4’s programme Out on Air, part of The Archive Hour series and to be transmitted tomorrow (February 10 at 8pm), is well timed to coincide with this month’s LGBT History Month.

Congressman Suggest State Dept Hires Gay Military Linguists Sacked Under DADT.  An American Congressman has today urged Secretary of State Condaleeza Rice to consider hiring military linguists discharged under the federal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” ban on lesbian, gay and bisexual service members.

Anti Gay Movement in Latvia Gears-Up for Battle.  Latvia Gay Pride and “Friendship Days” might be four months away, but the ‘anti-gay’ movement in the Baltic state is preparing for battle.

HRC Urges Homophobic Snickers Ads Be Pulled from Campaign.  The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the USA’s largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, is calling on the makers of Snickers, and its parent company Mars Inc., to pull the ad campaign launched yesterday during Sunday’s  Superbowl.

Sir Ian McKellen Launches Gay History Month.  Box office star Sir Ian McKellen took to the stage at the Drill Hall theatre in London at the weekend as a guest speaker at the launch of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans History Month.
