National Scheme to Monitor Sexual Orientation in UK Police
Service is Announced.
A national initiative to
monitor sexual orientation within the UK Police Service will be announced
later today at
‘Celebrate’ the 2005 European Gay Police Conference in West London.

Homophobia in Northern Ireland: A Gay Perspective,

Derry’s gay
community will be strongly represented again this year at the North
Ireland’s only pride march. As with previous years many will travel with
friends and family to what has always been a fun filled, colourful and
overall a peaceful event.

Home Secretary, Three Chief Constables to Speak at Gay Police
Conference.
The Home Secretary, Charles Clarke, will be the keynote
speaker at a conference of gay police officers from across Europe which is
being held tomorrow (June 30) and Friday.
June 29: Asia/Africa:
AIDS Threatens to “Overwhelm” Muslim Nations,
Study Finds.
A new report by the National Bureau of Asian
Research, a think-tank based in Seattle in the US, suggests that HIV/AIDS is
threatening to overwhelm many predominantly Muslim nations while their
leaders remain “in a state of denial”.

Europe/The World:
European Union Can Stop Other Countries Torturing Gays – ILGA-Europe. ILGA-Europe
today launches a report examining how the European Union can influence third
countries to end criminalisation of consenting sexual acts between persons
of the same sex which in some cases lead to death penalty.
June 26: UK/USA:
Blair Sends Son to 'Intern' for Homophobic, Closeted Gay
Congressman in Washington.
On the face of it, there is nothing
unusual for British Prime Minister Tony Blair to send his 21-year old son
Euan to “intern” for an American politician in Washington now he has
completed his university education in Bristol.

Polish Gays Plead to
Europe for Help in Combating
Hate:
Action Requested After
Outburst by
Polish MEP.
An impassioned plea to leading
“movers and shakers” in the European Union came this week from
Kampania Przeciw Homofobii (KPH –
Campaign Against Homophobia) on behalf of gays in Poland.
June 24: Iran:
Gay Web Sites Amongst Most Likely To Be Banned By
Iranian Censors.
The university-based OpenNet Initiative (ONI) has released “Internet
Filtering in Iran,” a report that documents the degree and extent to which
the Iranian government controls the information environment in which its
citizens live, including websites, blogs, email, and online discussion
forums.

Gay Teen Has Further 6
Weeks in LIA Reparative Therapy. The gay teen in Tennessee who
“came out" to his
parents last month and was promptly sent to a
“Love In Action International
Inc.”
refuge for reparative treatment has to stay at the fundamentalist Christian
institution for a further six weeks, DetourMemphis is reporting.

Gay Voluntary Groups Could Benefit From £2.5m Fund to Boost Equality Awareness.
Voluntary
organisations working in the gay sector could be in for a share of £2.5m to
raise awareness of employment equality regulations, Deputy Equality Minister
Meg Munn announced last week.

Gays Could Be Sleep-Walking Into Tax and
Benefits Nightmare, Says Brighton Councillor. Many same-sex
couples are at risk of a “drastic reduction in income” when the Government
changes tax and benefits systems with the introduction of the new civil
partnership register in December, says Brighton and Hove Green City
Councillor Simon Williams.

American Gay Kids’ Pleas For Help. By The Editor. If my knowledge of history is
correct, many Europeans set sail centuries ago to escape religious
persecution. They headed west, and America was founded. Generations later, it seems that
some Americans have forgotten that their forefathers fled to the “new land”
to escape persecution inflicted in the name of Christianity.

Pride in Warsaw ‘a Great Success” say Activists, by Peter Gentle in
Warsaw. Around
2,500 gay, lesbian and human rights campaigners marched through the centre
of the Polish capital on Saturday, despite having the ‘Equality Parade’
banned by the mayor of Warsaw.

Prime Minister Shows ‘Solidarity’ at Warsaw Gay Parade. Two high-ranking Polish
government officials joined the Gay Pride event today in Warsaw, despite a
“ban” by the city’s Mayor, Lech Kaczynski.
June 10: UK:
Cocktail Club Raises Over £10,000 for
Terrence Higgins Trust. Crowds of Terence Higgins Trust supporters
gathered at the elegant ‘Grade 1’ listed building One Whitehall Place in
London this week for a cocktail party that raised over £10,000 for people
living with HIV in the UK.

49ers Join With SF
Human Rights Commission on Gay and Other Issues.
The San Francisco 49ers today announced that the
team has partnered with the San Francisco Human Rights Commission to review
its diversity polices and training methods as part of a series of
initiatives the team is taking to improve its diversity practices.

SLDN Calls on Texas Gov. Rick Perry to Apologize After Anti-Gay Remarks.
Texas
Republican Governor Rick Perry on Sunday insinuated the state's lesbian, gay
and bisexual war veterans should leave the state if they are unhappy with a
recent anti-gay marriage amendment introduced there, according to the
Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN).
June 8: Poland:
Poland Fails EU Human Rights Obligations On
Gay Issues - OutRage! The banning of Warsaw Pride by the city’s
Mayor, Lech Kaczynski, sets a dangerous precedent for the respect of
gay rights in the European Union, says Brett Lock of the gay human rights
group OutRage!
June 7:
Canada/USA:
Gay
Muslims in Canada, US Denounce Escalation of Arrests in Saudi
Arabia.
Queer Muslims in the United States and Canada
united today in denouncing Saudi Arabia's recent increase in arrests of
suspected gay men. Salaam, a Canadian-based organization for queer Muslims
and Al-Fatiha, a US-based organization for Muslim sexual and gender
minorities, called on people of conscience in both countries to write to
Saudi officials to condemn the arrests.

There is no doubt that
December 5 and 21 will be two dates that will go down in “gay history” in
the United Kingdom.
On December 5, the Civil Partnership Act 2004

Bob Geldof to Address London Pride Parade
Assembly. Sir Bob Geldof is scheduled to address Pride
London Parade participants in Park Lane immediately before the 12-noon start
on Saturday July 2, the same day as Live 8 concert in Hyde Park.
June 4: Italy:
Unchain Us From The Vatican, Say Marchers on Milan Gay Parade.
Italy was depicted as a country chained to Vatican dogma at the Milan Gay
Pride Parade this evening. Over 100,000 attended the parade.

Arrested For Suggesting
Horse Is Gay, But Police Appear To Do Little When Homophobia Is Aimed at
Humans. Commentary. The law, and how it is interpreted
by different police forces in England, sometimes makes you wonder.
June 3: Italy: Milan’s Pride Parade Set to Attract 100,000 Gays in National Rights Campaign. A crowd of 100,000 is
expected at tomorrow’s Gay Pride Parade in Milan, despite the controversial
refusal of the city council to endorse the event, described by organisers as
“a superficial act of bigotry”.

Pioneering African Health Group
Receives 2005 Gates Award for Global Health. (HIV/AIDS related)
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced today that the African Medical
and Research Foundation (AMREF) will receive the $1 million 2005
Gates Award for Global Health for their extraordinary efforts for nearly 50
years to improve health in Africa’s poorest communities, build local health
infrastructure, and document their success to guide others.
June 1: USA/UK:
Anti Gay Group Targets Ford’s
Family-Friendly Policies After Failed Disney Boycott.
Hard on the heels of ending a failed boycott
against the Walt Disney Company, the anti-gay lobbying group, the American
Family Association, has called for a boycott of Ford Motor Company. In
addition, AFA slams the multi-national auto maker for
sponsoring gay events in Europe, targeting this month’s
Pride London in particular.
June 1: UK:
London
Braces for Gay Pride Parade and ‘Live 8’ Concert on Same Day.
The
organisers of Pride London will continue with Pride Day events despite the
announcement that Live 8 is to happen on the same day. In fact, they are
rather upbeat about the ‘clash’
June 1: Turkey:
Gay Jailed and Beaten In Turkish Military
Prison. Imprisoned Turkish gay activist and conscientious objector
Mehmet Tarhan is being violently abused in the military jail at Sivas in
eastern Turkey, reports David Allison of the gay rights group OutRage!
June 1: Norway:
Eurovision Comes to
Oslo’s Gay EuroPride.
Brotherhood of Man is set to headline at a
special Eurovision Show at EuroPride, being held on Oslo later this month.
