March 30:  USA/Latvia:  The Anti-Gay US-Latvian Axis: Homophobes of All Nations, Come Together!  By Kārlis Streips.  Once again we can prove to ourselves that religious extremists do not live in our world, they live in some parallel world which they alone are aware of.  It has been reported that the noisy structure known as “New Generation” invited an American called Kenneth Hutcherson to visit.

  Nigeria: 
Draconian Anti-Gay Bill Appears to be in ‘Hibernation’ While the draconian Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill 2006 appears to be ‘stalled in the Nigerian House of Representative – the lower house of the country’s parliament, there will be no celebrations in the gay community just yet.

  Nigeria/Europe: 
Further EU Condemnation of Nigeria’s ‘Anti Gay’ Legislation.  The Council of the European Union is backing the European Parliament’s call on the Nigerian authorities not to adopt the proposed law reinforcing a ban on same-sex relations already in force in Nigeria in its current form.

  Europe: 
Freedom of Assembly Belongs to Everyone, Including Gays – Council of Europe.   The European arm of the International Lesbian and Gay Association, ILGA-Europe, has welcomed a Council of Europe resolution that condemns bans in some countries of ‘Gay Prides’.

Veteran UK Gay Activist Steps Down.  The veteran gay activist George Broadhead has resigned as secretary of the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA) after 25 years service.

Gay Expectations ‘Up North’ for International Campaign Against Homophobia.  IDAHO-UK will be joining 50 countries in the fight against homophobia on May 17.  And so far it looks like one of the strongest areas in the country will be Northern England that will be marking International Day Against Homophobia.

Gay Bullying: Catholics Not Fit To Run Schools – Humanists. Such is the level of homophobia in the Catholic Church that its schools should be taken from it and returned to the community sector, says the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA)

Gay Bashing in Schools Must Be Tackled Now Says LibDem MP.  Recommendations to tackle homophobic bullying in schools from an influential committee of MPs have today been welcomed by the Liberal Democrats.

Dismiss US Army Recruiter Who Sent Anti-Gay and Racist Emails to Potential Recruit – SLDN Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) today strongly condemned the anti-gay and racist emails sent by Army Recruiter Sergeant Marcia Ramode to Corey Andrew, a potential recruit.

This Is War, Anti-Gay American Preacher Hutcherson Tells Europe.  As news emerged that a new “anti-gay” group had been registered in Latvia, the plot thickened as to the involvement of an American preacher with religious groups in the country who told an American newspaper: “this is a war”, referring to his anti-gay campaign in Europe.

  Poland:  
Intergroup Urges European Commission to Get Tough with Poland Over Gay Ban.  The European Parliament’s Intergroup on Gay and Lesbian Rights last week expressed alarm over reports of the Polish national government’s intended plans to adopt a law which would ban LGBT people from working in education and would also ban awareness-raising of LGBT issues in schools.

Blair’s “Real Joy” That Civil Partnerships Have Brought To Gay People.  British Prime Minister Tony Blair has spoke last night of the pride and “real joy" civil partnerships have brought to gay people and the “civilising effect” equality legislation has had beyond the community.

Religionists Demand the ‘Right to Discriminate’ Against Gays, Says Tatchell.  Fundamentalist Christians are set to demonstrate outside Parliament this evening as the House of Lords debate the Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2007.

Gloucestershire Gays Go Back Into Closet A group of gay men and women in Gloucestershire will be going back into “the closet” in May to draw attention to the fact that there are still many countries in the world where gays are persecuted, and even executed.

  Poland: 
School Censorship Proposal Threatens Basic Gay Rights.  The Polish government’s proposed legislation to censor all discussion of homosexuality in schools and other academic institutions would violate freedom of speech and impede free access to information, Human Rights Watch said last night in a letter to Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski.   Nigeria: 
Nigerian Anglican Activist Warns of ‘Gay’ Exodus.  The Nigerian branch of the Anglican Church pressure group on LGBT rights, Changing Attitude Nigeria (CAN), is warning other countries that the passing of the anti-gay marriage bill could cause significant problems for them, too.

  Indonesia: 
Gay NGO Worker and Partner Allegedly Tortured, Sexually Abused in Aceh.  A 32-years-old NGO worker and his same-sex partner were allegedly brutally tortured and sexually abused by the Banda Aceh police while in custody in January, the Hong Kong-based Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has revealed.

  USA: 
Retired Gay  Military Officers 'Come Out' and Demand Apology From Gen. Pace.  A group of seven high-ranking US military veterans today responded to recent remarks by General Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who earlier this week called lesbian, gay and bisexual service members ‘immoral’ and re-iterated his support for the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” ban on lesbian, gay and bisexual service members.

American Gay Group ACT UP Resurrected as General Pace Targeted in New York.  By Rex Wockner.  About 250 people picketed the Armed Forces Recruiting Station in Manhattan this afternoon in a demonstration that is being seen as the likely resurrection of ACT UP.

European Parliament Gets Tough With Nigeria Over “Anti-Gay” Bill.  The European Parliament is to call on the Nigerian Government and Parliament not to adopt the proposed 'Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act' in its current form.

Nigerian Anti-Gay Bill Could Lead To a Gay Genocide, Says Foundation.  The ‘anti-gay’ bill pending in the legislature of Nigeria could result in that country running afoul of international treaties which outlaw genocide, according to a statement issued this morning by the Gay Homeland Foundation (GHF).

Outrage! Calls for the Decriminalisation of Homosexuality in Ghana A call for the repeal of laws in Ghana that criminalise same-sex relations has been made by gay human rights group Outrage! as the Ghanaian President, John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor, arrived in London on a State visit.

Tracey Emin’s Neon Lights Up the Terrence Higgins Trust Gala Auction.  Two neon artworks by Tracey Emin raised £110,000 at the Lighthouse Gala Auction last night.

SLDN Condemns General and Demands Apology for Remarks about Gay Personnel.  The Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) today strongly condemned remarks by General Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, calling lesbian and gay personnel “immoral.”

  European Union/Nigeria: 
European Parliament to Debate Draconian Nigerian ‘Anti-Gay’ Bill The European Parliament is set to debate the proposed Bill that would not only ban gay marriage in Nigeria, but would also outlaw representations and advocacy of homosexuality in the country.  This Bill is currently going through the Nigerian Parliament.

  UK/Latvia: 
Anti-Gay Latvian Group Charges Blair With Interfering In Domestic Politics.  A letter of protest has been sent to British Prime Minister Tony Blair by the Latvian “No Pride” group, which organised the protest against Riga Gay Pride last year when demonstrators threw excrement at Pride participants.

  UK/Latvia: 
Ambassador Welcomes Gay Pride Accord Between London and Riga.  The ‘Statement of Unity’ between Pride London as Rigas Praidas, due to be formally signed this evening in Riga, was another important ‘first’ for Anglo-Latvian friendship, the British Ambassador, Ian Bond, said last night at an Embassy reception for members of Mozaika and the visiting officials Pride London to mark the signing.

Draconian Anti Gay Nigerian Bill: The Debate Continues  The draconian Bill that effectively outlaws representations and advocacy of  homosexuality in Nigeria could be on the statute book this month, a gay Nigerian activist said in London yesterday.

Tsoi Dismisses Allegations of London Assault of Gay Russian Journalist.  Sergei Tsoi, the press secretary to the Mayor of Moscow, has denied allegations that he assaulted gay journalist Nikolai Alekseev at the conclusion of a press conference in London last week.

Protect Davis, Gay English Church Group Pleads to Nigerian Archbishop.  By Colin Coward.  Davis Mac-Iyalla, Director of Changing Attitude Nigeria, has been the subject of further intimidation last week.  He was visited, when absent from his place of work, by two men who were identified as Nigerians.

Report Bashes One-Sided Aids Policies on Gays.  People with same-sex preferences are still a largely ignored and underserved community in the design and execution of HIV-prevention programmes throughout much of Africa, gay rights activists charged recently.

Mayor of London Urges New Mayor of Riga to Press on With Latvian Gay Pride March The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, today welcomed the statement of the new Mayor of Riga saying he was “ashamed” of the attack on the Gay Pride march in that city last year and urged him to ensure that the peaceful Gay Pride march in the city this year could proceed.

Moscow Mayor Press Secretary’s Alleged Assault on Gay Russian Journalist The Metropolitan Police are investigating a complaint of an alleged assault on Russian gay activist and journalist Nikolai Alekseev in London last week following the press conference given by the mayors of London, Berlin, Paris, Moscow and Beijing at City Hall.

Six Films for Gay and Lesbian Humanist Festival in London Six films, three features and three documentaries, are to be screened in four sessions at the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association’s film festival in London this month.

Senator Blasts Pentagon Response on ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ for Gays U.S. Senator. Ron Wyden, a senior member of the Intelligence Committee, has said he was extremely troubled by the response he received in a letter from the Pentagon concerning its “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

  Latvia: 
New Riga Mayor Ashamed of Events at Last Year’s Gay Pride.  Jānis Birks, the newly elected Mayor of Riga, appears to have no issues with the Gay Pride parade in the Latvian capital.  He was interviewed by the internet-based news portal Vdiena.lv which is run by the biggest Latvian daily newspaper “Diena”.

Russian Media Gives “Massive Coverage” of London Protest of Moscow Gay Pride Ban.  Russian gay leader Nikolai Alekseev spoke last night of his  “delight” at the “massive coverage in the Russian media” of Wednesday’s London protest against Moscow’s notoriously homophobic mayor, Yuri Luzhkov.

Editor of Gay Magazine Kaos-GL Acquitted Umut Guner, the editor and publisher of the Turkish LGBT magazine Kaos-GL, has been cleared of “peddling pornography” in the magazine.

Gay Pride Parade Wars: Livingstone Attacks Tatchell and Alexeyev Attacks Livingstone London Mayor Ken Livingstone was yesterday accused of being “hypocritical” by gay Russian journalist Nikolai Alexeyev, one of the organisers of Moscow Pride, who is in London and attended the post-M4 Summit press conference.

Homosexuality Not a Disease, Gay Parisian Mayor Tells Moscow’s Luzhkov.  Homosexuality is not a disease you catch, the mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, himself openly gay, told a press conference in London yesterday.
