Lack of
Lesbian, Gay, Transgender Rights in Europe Still Dramatic. A Dutch
MEP today welcomed a report presented to the European Parliament that showed
the rights of gay men and women – and transgender people – are
insufficiently protected throughout the European Union.

Two Moscow
Gay Pride Organisers Arrested for ‘Propaganda of Homosexuality’.
Two organisers of Moscow Gay Pride were arrested yesterday by police in
Ryazan, a city located 200 km southeast of Moscow. Nikolai Baev and
Irina Fet were detained in the city centre and charged with “propaganda of
homosexuality to minors”, an offence that carries a fine.

Iraqi Gays
Sentenced to Death for Their Sexuality Face Execution. More
than 100 prisoners in Iraq are facing execution – and some of them are
believed to have been convicted of the ‘crime’ of being gay, the UK-based
Iraqi-LGBT group revealed this afternoon. According to Ali Hili of
Iraqi-LGBT, the Iraqi authorities plan to start executing them in batches of
20 from this week.

city prepares for EuroPride, the people of Zürich have today elected an
openly gay woman as the Mayor.

Pride Not a Priority of the European Court of Human Rights, Russian
Activists Told. The Registrar of the European Court of Human
Rights in Strasbourg has told organisers of Moscow Gay Pride the court’s
President of the Chamber has decided not to give priority to their cases,
some of which have been waiting for more than two years.

United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and Pink Therapy are both deeply concerned about the
results of research by Professor Michael King of University College
Hospital, which was published today.

Russian Gay Activists Appeal Ban
on Iranian Embassy Picket
to the UN Human Rights Committee.
An official complaint has been sent today to the United
Nations Human Rights Committee based in Geneva,
Switzerland, in connection
with the ban of the picketing in front of the Iranian Embassy in Moscow with
the aim to condemn executions of homosexuals and minors in this country and
to appeal for the repeal of the death penalty.

Equality Rights Group chairman, Felix Alvarez, today welcomed news that MEPs
on the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee have formally backed
plans for a directive on multiple discriminations.

Among the initiatives for International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) on
May 17 in the United Kingdom will be a bid to stage the largest mass

Step’. The support of President Barack
Obama for the United Nations ‘statement’ calling for the universal
decriminalization of homosexuality is a crucial step forward, Louis-Georges
Tin, the founder and president of International Day Against Homophobia
(IDAHO) said today.

Irish
Gay Health Group Hits Out at Pope’s ‘Condom’ Statement. An Irish
gay advocacy group has today hit out at the Pope’s statement on condoms and
how they did nothing to help in the battle against HIV/Aids. HIV/Aids
was a problem “that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms,
which even aggravates the problems,” the Pope said.

Amnesty
Pleads to Pope Over Plight of Cameroonian Gays. Amnesty
International is urging Pope Benedict XVI to express the importance of
eradicating discrimination based on sexual orientation, when he meets with
members of the Special Council for Africa of the Synod of Bishops at the
Apostolic Nunciature of Yaoundé today (Thursday).

Marriage in Scotland: Parliament to Ask Scottish Government to Review
Marriage Act . By LGBT Network Staff Writer. The Scottish
Parliament Public Petitions committee agreed this afternoon that the
Scottish Government should be asked to amend the Marriage (Scotland) Act
1977, and if not, details the reasons for its refusal.

Must Make Clear if They Are Joining Anti-Gay Parties in Europe – Lib Dems.
Liberal Democrats are pressing the Conservatives to clarify if they are
intending to form an alliance with the anti-gay Polish Law and Justice party
in the European Parliament.

Warns of Dangers of Intolerance after Cameroon Union Circulates Anti-Gay
Article. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has
called on African journalists to beware the dangers of prejudice and
discrimination facing gay people after a report that a journalists' group in
Cameroon has put at risk colleagues by making public accusations of
homosexuality in a country where the practice is forbidden by law.

Banned Moscow Gay Pride Marches Appealed to European Court of Human Rights.
Organisers of Moscow Pride have this morning submitted appeals to the
European Court of Human Rights following the bans on ‘marches’ that were
banned by the Moscow authorities in May last year.

Official Calls for Religious Groups to Ignore City’s ‘Gay Pride’ in May.
A call has been made to religious groups by a Riga official to ignore the
‘Gay Pride’ march in the Latvian capital in May.
Mar 9: Serbia:
Anti-discrimination
Legislation Is Essential for the Democratic Future of Serbia – Bishop.
Calls have been made today for the Serbian government to put back on its
agenda the proposed anti-discrimination legislation. The draft legislation
is said to have been withdrawn before the vote in the Serbian Parliament
following pressure from the Serbian Orthodox Church.

Parliamentarians Condemned for Meeting Anti-Gay Rights Militants.
The attendance of several Ugandan parliamentarians at an anti-gay conference
in Kampala at the weekend has been condemned by the European Parliament’s
all-party “intergroup” for gay and lesbian rights.

Police Chief Says Gay Pride Is “Unacceptable”. Moscow’s police
chief, Vladimir Pronin, has said gay pride parades in the capital are “unacceptable”. “It’s unacceptable – gay pride parades shouldn’t be
allowed,” he told the Russian news agency Interfax on Friday.

Activists Prepare for Nigerian Anti-Gay Bill Hearing.
Nigerian gay rights activists and mainstream human rights organizations are
intensifying their campaign against the Same-Gender Marriage Prohibition
Bill at the forth-coming public hearing on the Bill.

Blackpool Announces Entertainment Line-up for Gay Pride.
The stage is set at what is going to be the biggest and best Blackpool Pride
to date. The fourth annual Blackpool Pride event takes place over
the weekend of May 16 and 17, with the festival moving to a new location
within the heart of what is fast becoming known as “Blackpool’s Gay
Village”.

Scottish Hate Crime Bill Get Committee Support.
Strengthened legislation to protect victims of hate crime came one step
closer today as the Justice Committee published its Stage 1 Report on the
issue.
Mar 5: Uganda:
The Anti Gay
U.S. Religious Right Exports Homophobia to Africa. A seminar which
features Scott Lively and is designed to attack lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender (LGBT) Ugandans under the cloak of religion has been strongly
condemned by the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC)
and Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG).
Mar 4: USA:
New Report
Reveals that Bullying of Gay Students in Oregon in a Problem.
A coalition of
advocacy groups today released a pair of reports pointing to the prevalence
of bullying in Oregon schools, calling the hostile campus climate a serious
detriment to educational achievement. The groups are joining with
lawmakers to strengthen Oregon’s anti-bullying law and create safeguards for
youth in Oregon schools.
